On Stripe's standard pricing, issuing a refund on a card or ACH Direct Debit payment costs nothing extra, but Stripe keeps the processing fee from the original payment: $36.55 on a $1,250 card payment. A dispute costs $15 when it's opened, plus $15 more if you counter it. You get the second $15 back if you win, but never the first. ACH disputes are final, can't be contested, and cancel the customer's authorization for later debits.

Every price and rule below is from Stripe's own pricing page and documentation, opened on 6 November 2026. Negotiated pricing can differ, so check your own Stripe fee schedule too.
Does Stripe refund its fees when you refund a payment?
No. Stripe's documentation says its processing fees from the original payment aren't returned (Stripe: refund and cancel payments). Its pricing page adds that Connect and currency conversion fees from the original payment aren't returned either (Stripe pricing).
Issuing the refund itself is free on standard pricing for cards and ACH Direct Debit. Stripe lists possible refund fees only for its bank transfers payment method, which is a different method from ACH Direct Debit.
So on a $1,250 card payment at Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢, the processing fee is $36.55. Refund the whole $1,250 and the customer gets $1,250 back, but the $36.55 stays with Stripe. Refund $500 of it and the $36.55 still stays.
There is one exception. A refund issued very soon after the payment can go through as a reversal: the charge drops off the customer's statement instead of a credit appearing, and Stripe withholds no fees on a reversal. Stripe's dispute documentation says a reversal usually happens within 2 hours of the payment being captured (Stripe: how disputes work). On a plan payment charged automatically on its due date, that window has usually passed by the time anyone asks for a refund.
How do refunds work in Stripe?
From the Dashboard, open the payment, choose Refund payment, leave the full amount or enter a smaller one, and pick a reason (Stripe: refund and cancel payments). A few rules matter on a plan:
- One payment at a time. A refund is made against one payment. You can refund a payment more than once, but never more than it was for. Refunding $3,000 that a customer paid across three plan payments means refunding each of the three.
- Only to where it came from. Stripe sends a refund back to the original payment method. It can't go to a different card or bank account. If the card has expired, the card issuer usually credits the replacement card.
- It comes out of your available balance. If the balance doesn't cover it, Stripe holds a card refund as pending until it does. Refunds on other payment methods fail instead.
- The customer waits. Stripe says a card refund shows up as a credit about 5–10 business days later, depending on the bank.
- Some fail. A closed account or a problem with the card can make a refund fail. The money comes back to your Stripe balance, which can take up to 30 days, and you have to refund the customer some other way.
- Bulk refunds are full refunds only. Partial refunds are issued one payment at a time.
How are ACH refunds different?
ACH Direct Debit has its own rules (Stripe: ACH Direct Debit):
- Full refunds only. Stripe doesn't support partial refunds on an ACH Direct Debit payment.
- Within 180 days of the original payment.
- Up to 3 business days to complete, and an ACH refund can't be cancelled once you issue it.
- No "refund" label. The credit appears on the customer's statement under your statement descriptor, so Stripe recommends telling the customer it's coming.
- Watch for a double credit. A refund doesn't stop a dispute. If you refund while the customer's bank is also disputing the payment, the customer can be credited twice. Stripe's advice is to tell the customer you're refunding, and how long it takes, so they don't go to their bank as well.
What does a Stripe dispute cost?
A dispute (a chargeback) is the customer asking their bank to take a payment back. Stripe's US prices (Stripe pricing):
| Fee | Price | Returned if you win? |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute received | $15.00 per dispute | No |
| Dispute countered, when you respond manually | $15.00 per dispute | Yes |
| Dispute appealed | $15.00 per dispute | No, and network fees apply |
When a dispute opens, Stripe takes the disputed amount and the $15 out of your Stripe balance straight away, and the money stays out for the whole dispute (Stripe: how disputes work). On the $1,250 payment:
| What happens | Taken from your balance | Dispute fees you pay |
|---|---|---|
| You accept the dispute | $1,250 | $15 |
| You counter it and win | $1,250, returned when you win | $15 |
| You counter it and lose | $1,250 | $30 |
| An ACH payment is disputed | $1,250 | $15 |
The dispute fees are on top of the processing fee on the original payment. The Stripe fee calculator works out that fee for any amount.
How long does a dispute take?
Stripe's documentation gives these timings for card disputes (Stripe: how disputes work):
- The customer files. Card networks typically allow a dispute within 120 days of the payment, sometimes longer. When a customer pays ahead for a service, the window generally starts on the date of the service, not the date of the payment.
- You respond. Usually 7–21 days, depending on the card network. Submitting evidence is the only way to overturn a dispute, even if the customer says they've withdrawn it.
- The bank decides. Usually 60–75 days after your evidence arrives.
From start to finish that's 2–3 months, and you can't speed it up except by accepting the dispute. While a dispute is open you can't refund the payment outside the dispute process. Some networks send an inquiry first. Answering it with evidence, or refunding in full, closes it without a dispute fee.
What does a dispute do to the rest of a payment plan?
More than it does to a one-off sale:
- Several payments can come back as one dispute. Stripe says that when a customer disputes several payments in a recurring plan, their bank sometimes opens a single dispute for the total against one of them. Three $1,250 payments can arrive as one $3,750 dispute.
- An ACH dispute ends the authorization. A disputed ACH Direct Debit payment cancels the customer's mandate, so the saved bank account can't be debited again. To charge it again you have to settle the dispute with the customer and collect a new authorization. If the customer disputes a later payment too, Stripe blocks that bank account from being used again (Stripe: ACH Direct Debit).
- ACH disputes are final. A consumer can dispute an ACH debit through their bank for up to 60 calendar days, and a business for up to two business days. Disputes inside those windows can't be contested through the ACH network, and Stripe doesn't refund the dispute fee. A failed ACH payment, which is different from a dispute, costs $4 (Stripe ACH pricing).
- The schedule doesn't know. A refund or a dispute is about money already paid. The payments still to come are a separate question, and someone has to decide whether the plan keeps running, gets rescheduled, or stops.
For a disputed card payment, the evidence that matters on a plan is the agreement the customer signed, the schedule they agreed to, and the receipts for what they've already paid. For an ACH inquiry, Stripe asks for the mandate authorization, a sales receipt and information that shows the account holder authorized the payment (Stripe: ACH Direct Debit). Refund vs chargeback covers the difference from the customer's side.
Should you refund before a customer disputes?
Often, yes, when the customer is entitled to the money anyway: a withdrawal under your refund policy, a payment charged twice, a payment taken after they cancelled. A refund costs you the processing fee you've already paid. A dispute costs that, plus $15 you never get back, plus your time and 2–3 months of not knowing, and each one adds to your dispute rate with that card network (Stripe: how disputes work).
When the payment is fairly owed, answer the dispute with the evidence above instead. When a student withdraws mid-program works through the refund side of a withdrawal on a plan.
How do refunds and disputes work across several locations?
A refund comes out of the available balance of the Stripe account that took the payment, and a dispute is debited from that same account. A business whose locations are separate legal entities usually has a Stripe account for each one, for the reasons in One LLC per location. So a refund for a Phoenix customer comes out of Phoenix's Stripe balance, and its fee and any dispute fee belong in Phoenix's books, not in a shared account somebody has to split at month end. Reconciling Stripe payouts per location covers how refunds and dispute fees show up in each payout.
