How to calculate Stripe fees

For a domestic card, multiply the amount by 2.9% and add 30¢. For ACH Direct Debit, multiply by 0.8% and stop at $5.

Card fee = amount × 0.029 + $0.30
ACH fee = the smaller of amount × 0.008 and $5

A $1,000 card payment costs $29.30, so you receive $970.70. The same $1,000 by ACH costs $5.

How much to charge to receive a set amount

Stripe takes its percentage from the whole charge, including whatever you add to cover the fee. So adding 2.9% + 30¢ to the price falls a little short. Divide instead:

Amount to charge = (amount you want + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029)

To receive $1,108.33 from a card payment, charge $1,141.74. Stripe's fee on $1,141.74 is $33.41, which leaves $1,108.33.

If you add that difference to the customer's bill because they paid by card, it is a surcharge. Stripe's surcharging guide lists credit cards only and a 3% maximum in the US. It also says you have to disclose the surcharge before the customer pays, show it separately on the receipt, and check the rules where you are, including state rules. Covering the whole 2.9% + 30¢ comes to more than 3% on any card payment under about $2,300, so the calculator flags it. More in What is a surcharge?

Stripe fees on a payment plan

On a plan, the 2.9% adds up to about the same however you split the balance. The 30¢ is charged on every payment, so more payments cost a little more. ACH works the other way: the $5 cap applies to each payment, so splitting a large balance into more payments adds more $5 fees.

Take a $14,800 program: a $1,500 deposit, then twelve payments of about $1,108. By card, Stripe's fees across the thirteen payments come to $433.08. By ACH, each payment hits the $5 cap, so the same thirteen payments cost $65. Put a number of payments in the calculator to see your own plan.
