R03 return code: no account or unable to locate account

The number looks right but the bank can't match it to this customer's account.

In brief

R03 is the ACH return code for "No Account/Unable to Locate Account." The account number has a valid structure and passes the check digit, but it doesn't belong to the person named in the debit, or it isn't an open account. The customer's bank has two banking days after settlement to send it. R03 is an administrative return. It counts toward Nacha's 3.0% administrative level and the 15.0% overall level. On a payment plan, get corrected bank details and a fresh authorization before the next installment.

What does R03 mean?

R03 is "No Account/Unable to Locate Account." Nacha's description has two parts:

  • The account number structure is valid and passes the check digit validation.
  • But the number doesn't correspond to the individual identified in the debit, or the account designated is not an existing, open account.

In plain terms, the number is well formed, so nothing caught it on the way in. The bank just can't match it to this customer.

How is R03 different from R02 and R04?

Code What went wrong
R02 The account existed and has been closed
R03 The number is well formed but doesn't match the customer or an open account
R04 The number itself isn't a valid structure

So a mistyped number that still looks valid fits R03. Nacha's notes on R04 say that entry may fail the check digit validation or contain an incorrect number of digits.

Who sends an R03, and how fast?

The customer's bank (the RDFI). It has two banking days. The return must reach the business's bank no later than the opening of business on the second banking day after the debit's settlement date.

Does R03 count against my return rates?

Yes. R02, R03 and R04 are Nacha's administrative returns. Measured over the preceding 60 days or two calendar months:

  • Administrative return rate: a level of 3.0% of debits.
  • Overall return rate: a level of 15.0% for all debit returns.

Nacha notes that a debit prenote counts in these calculations too. If a prenote comes back R03, the live payment that would have failed never gets sent.

Can I send the debit again?

Not with the same details. Stripe reports R03 and R04 as bank_account_invalid_details and blocks the account until the issue is resolved. It explains that Nacha requires originators to review and confirm the account before reinitiating a debit returned for any reason other than insufficient funds.

To clear a block on Stripe, contact the customer for correct details. If you think the block is a mistake, Stripe asks for a voided check or a screenshot from the online bank portal showing the full routing number, account number and account holder's name.

What should I do when a plan payment comes back R03?

  1. Check what you entered against what the customer gave you. A transposed digit is an easy mistake to make.
  2. Ask the customer to confirm the routing and account numbers. A voided check or a bank portal screenshot helps.
  3. Collect a fresh authorization with the corrected details.
  4. Reschedule the missed installment on a date the customer agrees to.

An R03 on the very first payment often means the account was never right. Nacha lists prenotes and micro-deposits among the ways to validate an account before the first debit.
