An Instant Payout sends funds from your Stripe balance to an eligible debit card or bank account straight away, instead of waiting for your payout schedule. You can request one any day, including weekends and holidays, and funds typically arrive within 30 minutes. On Stripe's US pricing it costs 1.5% of the amount paid out, with a minimum fee of 50¢. Standard payouts are free. Card funds qualify as soon as the charge completes, but ACH funds qualify only after the payment settles. New Stripe accounts aren't eligible straight away, and there is a daily limit.
What is an Instant Payout?
It is a payout you request yourself that arrives within minutes. Stripe says you can request one "any day or time, including weekends and holidays, and funds typically settle in the associated payout account within 30 minutes." Anything you don't pay out instantly still goes out on your normal payout schedule.
How much does an Instant Payout cost?
Stripe's pricing page lists Instant Payouts at 1.5% of Instant Payouts volume, with a minimum fee of 50¢. It notes that pricing differs for Connect users. A standard payout on the normal schedule is free.
| Instant Payout | Fee at 1.5% |
|---|---|
| $20 | 50¢ (the minimum) |
| $1,000 | $15.00 |
| $5,000 | $75.00 |
The fee is taken out in advance. Stripe says the instant balance it shows you already reflects what you would actually receive.
What funds can be paid out instantly?
Not your whole balance. Stripe's rules for the instant balance:
- Card payments are included as soon as the charge completes.
- ACH and other bank debits are included only after they fully settle, because they can be reversed before then.
- Only funds due to become available within about 6 business days are included.
- Pending recovery debits and Stripe Capital repayments are held back.
- The total is capped at what's left of your daily limit.
So a customer's card installment can be paid out the same day. An ACH installment has to settle first, which takes up to 4 business days on Stripe's standard ACH timing.
What are the limits?
- Eligibility: new Stripe users aren't eligible straight away. The Dashboard shows whether you are.
- Per payout in the US: at least $0.50 and at most $9,999.
- Per day: a maximum amount set for your account, and no more than 10 Instant Payouts. In the US the day resets at midnight Central Time.
- Destination: an eligible debit card, or some bank accounts. Stripe publishes the list of supported banks.
Does an Instant Payout make reconciliation harder?
It can. Stripe's payout reconciliation report says that because you control the timing and amount of instant payouts, Stripe can't identify which transactions each one includes. You reconcile instant payouts against your transaction history yourself. A business that already matches payouts to payments by location may find occasional instant payouts add manual work.
When does an Instant Payout make sense?
When cash today is worth more than the fee. On $5,000 the fee is $75. Waiting for the standard schedule costs nothing. Paying out $5,000 instantly every business day of a 21-day month would cost $1,575.
